Afrobeat - whats new?
2020 was the birth of the new musical project Afrostringz. Two artists, two worlds came into one: a fusion of different styles and cultures, producing a sound that is unique, different and powerful. Afrostringz is a collaboration between two artists-producers: Young D “The Beat Boss” from Nigeria (“Afro”) and Grammy-Award winning violinist/producer Miri Ben-Ari, originally from Israel (“Stringz”). The duo represent African music in America and what is Afrobeat 2020.
Their first single “She dont know” is about a guy having a “secret crush” on a beautiful girl. In the music video Young D. tells Miri the story about the girl he likes, she practices dance in a New York dance studio, where he hangs out just to see her, but shhh you cannot tell! Nice cameo by dancer Gayle King, DJ Buka and Nestreya.
Afrostringz music has soulful lyrics, haunting strings melodies and a driving Afrobeat rhythm. “She dont know” was followed by a remix and also a bonus track “Corona Be Gone”, an Afrobeat song dedicated to COVID 19.
An Afrobeat song about COVID 19?
Afrobeat 2020 during COVID, believe it. We all know that music is a vehicle for self expression, and this song is about a guy who wants to break up with a girl, a terrible horrible no-good girl that shakes his world upside down, she affects his being and infects the air he breaths, Her name is - Corona. The song has some signature melancholic violin melodies by Miri Ben-Ari while Young D. begs the girl to leave him alone and be gone now. Don’t we all?!
Afro Trap Queen
These new emerging Afrobeat artists followed their first release with an Afro Remix to the classic Hip Hop song Trap Queen by Fetty Wap, they produced an Afro House remix with lush strings that took this classic Hip Hop song all the way to Africa and to Afro playlists, who would have thought?!
Afrostringz introduce a new approach to Afrobeats and African music, their sound, look and message definitely distinguish them from other artists and make them a stand-alone subgenera inside the African music. I would keep an eye (or an ear) on their music releases. You can find their Afro songs on all digital platforms, they are definitely one of the most interesting music projects to come out in 2020.
